American Jiu-Jitsu, built for starting from zero.
Whether your week is spent at a desk or on your feet, you're probably here for the same reasons most of our students were: a real skill, real confidence, a body that works again. Starting from zero is normal here — it's what the whole first lesson is designed around.

New to the name? American Jiu-Jitsu is our approach to the grappling art many people google as BJJ — here's the difference.
The room you're walking into
The room is what people remember: patient, step-by-step, no ego — where the newest person gets the most help, not the most attention. Nobody expects you to be good. We expect you to be present.
Two plain facts for the practical part of your brain: mats are sanitized between every class, no exceptions — and every drill is instructional, taught by a Coach whose name you'll know before your feet touch the mat.
"Joining Egley six months ago was one of the best decisions I've ever made. I walked in not knowing what to expect, and now I can't imagine my life without it. The coaches are top-tier — knowledgeable, supportive, and genuinely invested in your growth. More than just learning Jiu Jitsu, Egley has helped me build confidence, discipline, and accountability in ways that have impacted every area of my life."

Women often tell us the hardest part was walking in the first time — it's why Boise runs a dedicated Women's American Jiu-Jitsu class, and why your first lesson is private at both Academies.
The part nobody warns you about
People come in for the workout. They stay because there's always something to learn. An hour on the mat is the rare part of a modern day where your phone is in a cubby and your head is entirely in one place — wrestling with a problem, getting it wrong, then suddenly getting it right in front of someone who noticed. The workout sneaks in while you're busy being interested.
You'll leave tired in the way that clears your head, with something you couldn't do yesterday. That's the part the couch can't offer.
And if "get in shape first" is the sentence standing between you and the door — the shape comes from the training, not before it. Old injury? Tell your Coach; the lesson bends around your body, not the other way around.
What your first lesson looks like — and what happens at minute 46
Your first lesson is private for an honest reason: walking into a group class blind is the part people dread, so we removed it. Forty-five minutes, one Coach, real technique from minute one — no sparring, no crowd, nothing you didn't agree to.
And minute 46, plainly, because "free lesson" has burned people before: your Coach tells you honestly whether and where you'd fit, walks you through what training here would look like if you want to see it, and answers whatever you ask. You can say no right there in the room and you'll get a handshake and a genuine "glad you came in." No contract on a clipboard, no closer waiting by the door.
Wear comfortable workout clothes. If your class needs a Gi — the traditional uniform — we'll lend you one.

"I've been a member of several Jiu Jitsu gyms over the years. Egley Train is far and away my favorite. Welcoming atmosphere and expert instruction that people of all experience levels can gain a lot from."
